Serie B Relegation Play-Out Between Sampdoria and Salernitana Postponed After Food Poisoning Outbreak

The second leg of the Serie B play-out has been pushed back 48 hours to Sunday, June 22 due to an outbreak of food poisoning.

Salernitana against Sampdoria was due to be played on Friday night (June 20) but the Salerno outfit asked for the game to be moved after players and staff became ill on their return from the 2-0 defeat in Genoa in the first leg on Sunday.

Twenty-one people were affected and some were hospitalised, leading to the cancellation of Monday’s training session.

Speaking on Monday, Salernitana CEO Maurizio Milan said: “We are sincerely shocked by what happened and by the series of events that risk undermining Salernitana’s regular and peaceful approach to the final and fundamental minutes of the season.

“We have already interfaced informally with the Lega Serie B, receiving a general openness to evaluate our requests. Many players and staff, at the moment, are not even able to show up at the sports center to resume training and we trust in the availability of the responsible bodies so that this serious situation can be taken into account and, at the same time, ascertain the causes of this widespread and serious episode.”

The request was granted on Tuesday as Lega B released a statement confirming the new date.

Salernitana were due back in training on Tuesday but several players and manager Pasquale Marino played no part.

This is the latest delay to the Serie B play-out which was originally scheduled for mid-May and was due to be between Salernitana and Frosinone.

Sampdoria finished the regular season in 18th place and were relegated before being handed a lifeline when Brescia, who had finished in 15th, were docked points for financial irregularities.

Brescia, who have since gone bankrupt, took Sampdoria’s place, the Blucerchiati were put into the play-out and Frosinone were saved.

Marino’s men must overturn a two-goal deficit at the Arechi Stadium to stay in Serie B after Melle Meulensteen and Marco Curto scored in the first leg.

Sampdoria are aiming to avoid slipping into the third tier for the first time in their 79-year history.
